John Amos, Jr. was born in Newark, New Jersey, on December 27, 1939. He was born to Annabelle P. Amos and John Amos Sr., who worked as a mechanic. His name comes from his father. His childhood and adult life were spent in New Jersey. In 1958, he graduated from East Orange High School. Amos went to Colorado State University after finishing his first year of college at Long Beach City College. It was there that he earned a degree in sociology. Amos is still going to school at Colorado State University.

After Amos graduated from college, he started working as a football player in the NFL. The first time he played, it was with the Denver Broncos. The next time was with the Kansas City Chiefs, in 1964. Unfortunately, he got hurt and couldn’t play for the team.
